Off to Ann Arbor

I leave in another hour for one of the great joys of my life: the annual conference of the Children's Literature Association, where professors come from around the world to present scholarly papers about children's books. The conference is held somewhere different each year. This year it's taking place in Ann Arbor.

I'm attaching a link to the conference program so you can see what amazing fun awaits me. How about a paper on "Three Strikes and You're IN: The Outsider/Insider Paradigm in Baseball Stories," "Nancy Drew: Solving the Case of Girl Gaming and Technologically Inspired Fiction,” "Images of Childhoods in Taiwanese Juvenile Fiction in the 1960s,""Critiquing Colonialism from Within: British Postcolonial Fantasy for Young Readers" ? Yum!!!

  1. Hi Mrs. Mills....I'm 14 years old and I finished writing a novel that turned out to be roughly 150,000 words. I want to get published, so do you have any tips for me on how I can do that? I'm sorry if this isn't the place for me to post this...but thank you for your time! :)

  2. Hi, young reader! Why don't you email me directly on my email at cmills@colorado.edu so we can have longer posts back and forth. Step one for getting published is to make your book the best it can possibly be. Have you gotten any constructive feedback from any trusted readers? Friends? Fellow writers? A teacher?

  3. Thank you for responding!! I'll try to email you there sometime tomorrow if I can. My mom is going to go through it for me and check my grammar :) but other than that, no one has gone through it yet. Do you think I should send query letters or are those not necessary now?

  4. Hi again, young writer. Different publishers/editors have different requirements for what they want to see - query, synopsis, sample chapters, whole manuscript. You'll need to get a book like Writers Market that gives that info.
